Artifacts

The following artifacts are tools that we have made and thought would come to use while teaching this specific lesson. We have integrated technology in to all of these artifacts in order to maximize one-to-one learning in the classroom as well as students' technology skills. The artifacts we have made are, in one way or another, engaging, effective, efficient, and/or enhancing.

Artifact 1: Screencastomatic instructional video

This video would be helpful in introducing the topic of phenomes- what they are and simple phonemes and how to pronounce them. We created this video through google slides and screencastomatic in order to maximize personalization to this lesson. The video we have created is effective because it supports specific standards, particularly Indiana state standards:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.C

Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken                 single-syllable words.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.D

Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual                   sounds (phonemes).

This video is also efficent because it saves the instructor time from making their own video. Last but not least, this video is enhancing because students can apply their knowledge to the video by pronouncing the phonemes they already know along with the video.

Artifact 2: Plickers quiz

We have created an online quiz on plickers, an interactive quiz website where kids hold up a sheet of paper in a certain direction to reflect their answer. Questions on this quiz are true and false and pertain to whether or not a certain phoneme is present in a word. The teacher then scans the room with the IPad camera and the students' answers are collected. Then, the results from the quiz pop up on the projector. This quiz is not only fun for the students, it is also effective, efficient, enhancing, and engaging. The quiz is effective because it applies directly to the standards listed above and connects with students' prior knowledge of the topic. It is also efficient because by using this quiz, the teacher and students will save time and energy by not having each child state their answer. Instead, the teacher can simply scan the room with an IPad to collect their students' answers. It is enhancing because students are connecting in a way that would not be possible without technology and are able to represent their knowledge through technology. Lastly, this quiz is engaging because due to this quiz, students will pay more attention to the topic and the interactive feature is purposeful and directly related to learning the standards.

Artifact 3:

We have also created a google survey follow-up that will let the students honestly inform the teacher if they enjoyed the project. It would be anonymous to ensure privacy and no biased conclusions. I also think it would be beneficial for the students to add comments on what could be added or removed, and what was difficult or too easy. This is awesome to provide feedback and to help the teacher improve the lesson for the next time it will be taught. This survey is enhancing for the teacher and students, as it allows the teacher to engage in anytime /anywhere collaboration with their students in order to improve the lesson.
