objectives &

Tasks

After this lesson that we have created, students should be able to:

  • Identify individual phonemes and their unique sounds

  • Combine individual phonemes to make words & pronounce the words they made

  • Break down words into their correct phonemes to sound out that word

  • Correctly construct, spell, and sound out words made of individual phonemes in a booklet and recording.

Students will complete these objectives through the following tasks:

  •   Introductions to phonemes and their sounds:

    • Playing "Vowel Pairs Cat Food Spelling"                                  (http://www.education.com/game/vowel-pair-cat-food-spelling/ ) This game allows students to place individual letters to the beginning of a word, then pronounces the word that the student has created. This allows students to hear and see how one letter is pronounced in a word and also assists them in learning how to make a word out of a single phoneme.

    • Playing "slap the bug" on the whiteboard. The teacher writes around 20 different phonemes on the board and divides the class into two different teams. Each team will have a member come to the board and will be given a fly swatter. The teacher will then say "slap the bug that is pronouced ooh" in which the two students should turn towards the board and slap "/oo/" on the board. Whichever student gets to the answer fastest gets a point towards their team. Team members that get to go to the board can be chosen by Class Dojo (https://www.classdojo.com) The teacher can also keep track of students who are having trouble with the lesson and contact parents through this website.

  • Combine individual phonemes to make words & pronounce the words they made

    • Using the "make a word" game on the Starfall learn to read website (http://www.starfall.com/n/level-a/learn-to-read/load.htm) This game allows students to make words out of different phonemes and pronounces the words the student makes, with emphasis on each single phoneme. This website is great for learners of different levels and students who are having trouble with pronunciation of particular phonemes because it has different activities for each phoneme and includes higher level words and phonemes.

  • Break down words into their correct phonemes to sound out that word

    • Use the interactive whiteboard to project words (ex: look) on to the board. Ask students if they know a phoneme in the word, if one raises their hand, have them come to the interactive whiteboard and circle the letters and pronounce the phoneme to the class. Continue this process until the whole word has been circled and pronounced. Then, as a class, put together the individual phonemes to pronounce the word. Students can use the Phonics Geinus (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phonics-genius/id461659980?mt=8) app. This app allows for students to choose which phoneme is the correct answer, then lets the student click on it and as the app reads the sound, to ensure they have they right answer and reinforce their knowledge of the sound of the phoneme.

  • Correctly construct, spell, and sound out words made of individual phonemes in a booklet and recording.

    • Students will create a booklet out of sentences that are made of words they have made by adding phonemes together. They will be given a sheet of phonemes to cut out ( can be made on google docs- â€‹https://www.google.com/docs/about/) and piece together to make words, which they will then piece together to make sentences, then a story. Students will be in charge of making this story and pasting their sentences on a paperback booklet as a rough draft. An online timer (http://timer.onlineclock.net/)would be ideal for this activity to help students stay on track and work within the time given.

    • As students finish their rough draft, the student will collect clip art/pictures they will use in thier story. They will then use the StoryBuddy 2 app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/storybuddy-2/id505856601?mt=8) to create a final project: a digital booklet with their story typed out accompanied by their drawings or pictures that they have found. The app also allows students to make a recording that goes along with their book, so they can display their ability to read words and stories by piecing together phonemes.
